The muarta, or Chilean guava, is somewhat related to the guava. The small, semi-ball shaped berries grow on shrubs of one to two metres in southern Chile. Nowadays, they are also cultivated in Tasmania and New Zealand where they are known as “Tazziberry” or “New Zealand Cranberry”, respectively.
The taste of the dark red to purple muartas reminds of quince or wood strawberries. Initially, the Chilean guava was made to jam in southern Chile only, or prepared with aguardiente, a spirit. Today it is a popular ingredient for cakes and desserts, or it is eaten as a sweet snack.
