Liquorice, which means sweet root, is a plant of the legumes. It is native in the Mediterranean and in West Asia. The plant is sensitive to frost and prefers direct sunlight and deep soil rich in humus. Liquorice is a herbaceous perennial growing up to 100 centimetres high. Its roots are harvested in autumn and used in natural medicine and for tea. But its most renowned use is the sweet with the same name.
