The sweet-sour refreshing taste of the physalis is something unique. Especially dried, they offer a particular tastebud experience because physalis are soft to the bite and with a mild acidity they are great in muesli or nibbled pure. The physalis, also called Inka berry because it originates from South America, is a nightshade plant. After being established in South Africa, the berry was also called Cape gooseberry. The remarkable feature of the physalis is the lantern-shaped “packaging” of the fruit. The orange-red berries, of the size of a cherry, are found within the calyx, the wilted leaves do not fall off but enclose the fruit.
